“Shadows of the Fallen: A Tale of Fulgrim and Gilliman”
In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium, the echoes of brotherhood and betrayal resonate through the cosmos. One such tale is that of the fallen Primarch Fulgrim and his loyal brother Roboute Gilliman. Today, we delve into the pivotal battle that forever altered the fate of the Imperium and the Ultramarines Legion.
The events leading up to this confrontation were as intriguing as they were tragic. Gilliman, the brilliant strategist, was not his usual self. He was blinded by rage, and his decisions became increasingly erratic, a stark departure from his typically meticulous approach. He believed that acting against the Code of Astartes would catch his fallen brother Fulgrim off guard. However, his gamble was ill-fated.
Fulgrim, now a Slaanesh demon prince, welcomed Gilliman aboard his flagship, the Emperor’s Pride. As the loyal Primarch traversed the once majestic ship, the haunting memories of a time when Fulgrim had welcomed him into a hall filled with cheering Children of the Emperor were almost too much to bear. Gilliman’s mind was filled with regret and sorrow, pondering how different the course of history could have been had his brother not fallen to Chaos.
In a daring move, Gilliman ventured alone to confront Fulgrim. Their relationship had always been strained, but seeing his brother transformed into a demonic being brought tears to his eyes. Fulgrim, however, reveled in his new form and mocked Gilliman, reminding him of his past failures and extolling the virtues of his new Chaos lord.
Despite realizing his mistake and the need to retreat, Gilliman was compelled to battle his obviously superior foe. Fulgrim, armed with four swords, delivered a fatal blow to Gilliman, exploiting a vulnerable spot marked by the cursed blade of the Word Bearers’ Captain Corfarion.
As death approached, Gilliman’s thoughts remained with the fate of the Imperium and its people. His loyal Ultramarines managed to evacuate him to their ship, where he was placed in a stasis field by skilled apothecaries. He was returned to his homeworld Macragge, where he sat on a marble throne for 10,000 years. The Fortress of Hera, containing the frozen Primarch, became one of the most revered places in the Imperium.
Rumors began to circulate among religious pilgrims that Gilliman’s wound was healing and that he would soon awaken to once again lead humanity. However, while he remained unmoved, the Ultramar system fell into disrepair. Many worlds declared independence, and harsh conditions led to poverty and slavery. The system faced numerous threats, the most devastating being the Tyranid invasion of Macragge. The Ultramarines managed to clear their homeworld of the Xenos, but it was left in ruins.
The greatest threat came with the 13th Black Crusade of Abaddon the Despoiler at the end of the 41st millennium. Abaddon, the treacherous son of the Arch-Predator, ravaged the galaxy with his legion of traitorous forces. He was drawn to Ultramar by information that a relic that could change the course of the war and prevent the triumph of Chaos had been delivered to McCrag.
The legacy of Roboute Gilliman and his encounter with Fulgrim embodies the eternal struggle between loyalty and betrayal, hope and despair, that defines the Warhammer 40,000 universe. As we continue to explore the labyrinthine lore of this grimdark universe, remember: In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war.
