Warhammer 40K: Age of the Imperium

The Imperium of Mankind: A Turbulent History

Rise of the Emperor

The Age of Strife, marked by Warp storms and chaos, gave way to a new era with the emergence of the powerful leader known as the Emperor of Mankind. Conquering Terra and forming an alliance with the Mechanicum on Mars, the Emperor set out to reunite humanity with the help of his genetically engineered Space Marines.

The Great Crusade (200 years)

Under the War Council of the Emperor and his Primarchs, vast Expedition Fleets fought back against alien and warp-tainted forces, reclaiming many lost systems for the Imperium. This period saw significant advancements in human civilization, but it was not without its challenges.

Horus Heresy: A Turning Point

The Great Crusade ended in catastrophe when Horus, the favored son of the Emperor, fell under the influence of Chaos and led a rebellion against his creator. The Imperium teetered on the brink of collapse, and though Horus was ultimately slain, the Emperor suffered mortal wounds.

Age of Rebirth (Recovery and Reform)

As the Imperium slowly recovered from the Horus Heresy, numerous reforms were implemented to prevent future large-scale rebellions. The Imperial Army was reorganized, and the loyal Space Marine Legions adopted the Codex Astartes, written by Primarch Roboute Guilliman.

Nova Terra Interregnum (Chaos and Upheaval)

The Ur-Council of Nova Terra challenged the authority of the High Lords of Terra, claiming rule over the Segmentum Pacificus. This period saw massive religious wars and the Cataclysm of Souls, which ravaged the Imperium.

Age of Apostasy (Civil War and Bloodshed)

Goge Vandire’s dual rule as Ecclesiarch and Master of the Administratum plunged the Imperium into a seven-decade civil war, marked by bloodshed and devastation.

Age of Redemption (Purges and Crusades)

The Great Cull, launched by the High Lords of Terra, saw thousands of worlds burning with the pyres of heretics. Saint Basillius judged thirty Space Marine Chapters to be wanting, leading to a crusade into the Eye of Terror.

The Waning (Exhaustion and Overextension)

As the Imperium’s military resources dwindled, Ork and Chaos forces overwhelmed many planets and systems. Space Marine Chapters were granted control over systems to maintain stability.

Time of Ending (Catastrophe and Rebirth)

The galaxy became increasingly hostile, and the Imperium began to crumble. Cadia was destroyed, and the Great Rift divided the Imperium in two. However, the rebirth of Primarch Roboute Guilliman offered a glimmer of hope for humanity.

Age of the Dark Imperium (A New Era)

Though the galaxy has been split in two, the Imperium endures thanks to Guilliman’s efforts. As the light of the Astronomican fades, humanity must navigate the treacherous landscape of the 41st Millennium.
