Horus Lupercal – Warhammer 40K – Part 4 (Part 4 of 7)

The Warmaster’s Reckoning

Horus, now empowered by the Chaos gods, set his sights on Terra, determined to overthrow the Emperor and claim the throne for himself. However, his plans were soon disrupted by Leman Russ and the Space Wolves, who had tracked the Vengeful Spirit to the Trisolian.

A Titanic Battle

The two Primarchs clashed in a fierce battle, with Horus wielding his newfound powers against Russ’s unyielding determination. Despite being protected by the Spear of Russ, Horus’s sheer strength began to gain the upper hand. Just as all seemed lost, Russ broke free from Horus’s grasp and plunged the Spear into the Warmaster’s side.

A Glimmer of Redemption

The wound inflicted by Russ had an unexpected effect: it cleansed Horus of the corruption that had consumed him since Molech. For a moment, the true Horus Lupercal was revealed, and Russ saw his brother, not a creature of Chaos. Yet, Horus’s resolve remained unwavering, and he rejected Russ’s offer to return to Terra and seek redemption.

The Traitor Legions in Disarray

As Horus recovered from his wound, his leadership was called into question by the other Traitor Primarchs. Fulgrim and Angron refused to answer his summons, while Mortarion demanded to receive orders directly from Horus himself. With Abaddon busy pursuing the Space Wolves, Horus Aximand and Falkus Kibre vied for control, further destabilizing the traitor war effort.

Maloghurst’s Desperate Gambit

In a desperate bid to restore order, Maloghurst turned to Lorgar and Zardu Layak to revive the Warmaster. They revealed that a part of Horus’s soul was trapped within the gate of Molech, torn apart by the Chaos gods’ squabbles over their prized pawn. Maloghurst embarked on a perilous journey into the Warp, seeking to recover the lost piece of Horus’s soul.

The Warmaster’s Awakening

Within the Warp, Maloghurst found Horus on an eternal battlefield, waging a never-ending struggle against enemies from across time and space. Maloghurst revealed the truth about Horus’s situation, and the Warmaster refused to submit to the Chaos gods. In a final act of desperation, Maloghurst plunged a knife into Horus’s wound, sacrificing his own life to awaken the Warmaster.

The Traitors Unite

With Horus renewed, he took command of the Legion once more and met with the Traitor Primarchs on Ullanor. Lorgar’s plan to usurp Horus was foiled, and the Warmaster beat him viciously, exiling him from his sight. The Traitors arrayed their forces, and a second, darker triumph was held on Ullanor. With their slaves sacrificed to the gods, Horus ordered the final assault on Terra.
