The Kroot: A Species of Mercenaries and Hunters
The Kroot are a fascinating species that operate in a clan-based culture, with a strong emphasis on family ties and ancestral traditions. Their society is organized into kindreds, which are similar to mercenary companies or nomadic warbands. Each kindred has its own unique codes, traditions, and scent-variants, as well as skin pigmentations.
Close Bonds and Ancestral Reverence
Kroot are known for their extremely close bonds within their kindreds. To attack one Kroot is to raise the ire of its entire kindred. They have a deep reverence for their ancestors, who are collectively known as the Roots. The Roots are venerated for conserving the wisdom, knowledge, and strands that enabled the Kroot of the present to live and continue their family lines.
Mercenary Culture and Genetic Absorption
The Kroot operate as mercenaries, offering their services to anyone willing to pay them. This allows them to gather genetic material from all over the galaxy, which they believe is essential for strengthening their species. They travel the galaxy, taking limited contracts from both major and minor races, and are regularly employed by the T’au.
Technology and Warfare
Despite appearing to be a simple pre-industrial society, the Kroot possess advanced technology that they use for warfare and interstellar travel. Their primary weapon is a rifle derived from the fighting staffs used by their ancestors, which has been modified by the T’au to fire charged particles. They also make use of exotic firearms, such as the Accelerator Bow and the Kroot Bolt Thrower.
Spacefaring Capabilities
The Kroot were a spacefaring race even before their contact with the T’au. They possess Warp-capable Warspheres, which are constructed by consuming Ork Mekboyz and mimicking their technology.
Religion and Burial Ceremonies
The Kroot believe in a variety of gods, including Vawk and Gmork, who are credited with creating the universe. They see the eating of the dead as a sacred act and honor their fallen by consuming them in burial ceremonies.
