Necron Warhammer 40K – Part 4 (Part 4 of 6)

The Necron Empire: A Hierarchical Structure

At the pinnacle of the Necron Empire are the Phaerons, rulers of vast dynasties that encompass multiple worlds. Beneath them are the Overlords, who govern clusters of Tomb Worlds within their Phaeron’s domain. The Lords, each overseeing a single Tomb World, form the next tier of the hierarchy. Supporting these nobles are the Royal Courts, comprised of Necron Lords and Crypteks. The size and prestige of a Royal Court reflect the military power of its ruler.

Intrigue and Politics

Necron Courts are notorious for their intricate webs of politics and intrigue, mirroring those found in human societies. Below the Royal Court are the War-Phalanxes, consisting of Necron Warriors, Immortals, and war engines. Auxiliaries, such as the Destroyer Cults and Flayed Ones, support these ranks, while vast swarms of autonomous Canoptek constructs maintain the empire’s infrastructure. At the bottom of this hierarchy, captive C’tan endure, shackled and exploited by their Necron overseers.

Diverse Goals and Personalities

Necron nobles exhibit a wide range of goals and personalities, with some seeking conquest or extermination of lesser races, while others act defensively or strive to reverse Biotransference. The Destroyer Cult, for example, has embraced its machine nature and seeks to eradicate all life in the galaxy. Conflicts between dynasties are not uncommon, with many still emerging from the Great Sleep or reeling from damage sustained during their prolonged hibernation.

Technological Mastery

The Necrons are renowned for their expertise in Material technology, which often appears magical to other civilizations. Their technological masters, Crypteks, manipulate matter at a fundamental level, wielding concepts like phase-gates and temporal looping. Necron super-weapons, such as the World Engine and Celestial Orrery, possess devastating capabilities. Living Metal, or Necrodermis, is the foundation of nearly all Necron technology, allowing for self-repair and regeneration.

Advanced Armaments and Constructs

Necron troops are equipped with an array of devastating armaments, including Gauss Weapons, which strip away a foe’s atoms layer by layer. Their anti-grav warmachines, based on the art of invasion and terror, wield horrifying energy weaponry and esoteric abilities like Worm Holes. The Necrons also employ large numbers of non-sentient Canoptek constructs, which tended their Tomb Worlds during the Great Sleep.

Fleet Capabilities and Interstellar Travel

The Necron fleet is a small but deadly force, capable of destroying most ships with ease. Unlike other civilizations, the Necrons do not rely on the Warp for interstellar travel, making them difficult to intercept. Instead, they utilize Dolmen Gates and Inertialess Drive to achieve faster-than-light travel. The Necrons are also known for their Blackstone, a substance that can block the powers of the Warp, making it a precious commodity across the galaxy.

Reality Bubbles and Advanced Materials

The Necrons can create hidden sub-dimensional reality bubbles, connected to Tomb Worlds via Reality-Tethers. These bubbles can be designed to allow only authorized access and can contain strongholds built within them. The Necrons’ mastery of fundamental physics is also the source of advanced materials like Strangesteel and Megaton Matter, as well as the Antimatter Collider.
