The Evolution of the Necrons: From Humble Beginnings to Galactic Conquest
The Birth of a New Threat
In the realm of science fiction, few armies have captivated audiences like the Necrons. But where did these mechanical warriors originate? To answer this question, we must look back to the 1990 board game Space Crusade, which featured Chaos Androids – killer robots that fought against the Imperium. Although not directly related to the Necrons, these androids drew inspiration from the Terminator franchise and laid the groundwork for the Necrons’ eventual creation.
The First Glimpse of the Necrons
Fast-forward to 1998, when the Necrons made their debut in White Dwarf 217 and 218. At this time, little was known about these mysterious beings, except that they originated from the Necrontyr. The initial Necron army consisted of only a few units: Necron Lords, Destroyers, Warriors, and Scarabs. However, this modest beginning would eventually give rise to a vast and complex army.
A New Era for the Necrons
The release of the first official Necron codex in 2002 marked a significant milestone in the army’s development. This codex established the Necrons as soulless automatons serving the C’tan, powerful beings who wielded immense power. However, this narrative would undergo a radical shift with the release of the 5th Edition Codex in 2011. This new codex introduced dynasties, named characters, and a more nuanced understanding of the Necrons’ motivations. It also revealed that the Necrons had overthrown their former C’tan masters, forging a new path forward.
A Legacy of Conquest
Today, the Necrons remain a formidable force in the world of science fiction, with a rich history and intricate lore. From their humble beginnings as killer robots to their current status as a complex, dynamic army, the Necrons continue to captivate audiences and inspire new generations of fans.
