Raptors Chapter Warhammer 40K – Part 2 (Part 2 of 4)

Raptors Chapter: A Legacy of Resilience and Adaptation

The Raptors Chapter of the Adeptus Astartes embodies the virtues of survival, adaptation, and cunning warfare. From the brutal conflicts of the Badab Sector to their harrowing survival on Jemadal, the Raptors’ story is one of tenacity in the face of overwhelming odds.

Early Campaigns: The Badab Sector and Surngraad

In 906.M41, the Raptors joined forces with the Red Scorpions, Fire Angels, and Salamanders to quell Secessionist forces in the Badab Sector. Under the leadership of Lias Issodon, the Chapter deployed their 2nd, 5th, and 6th Companies, supported by assault reserves and scouts. While not chosen to command the campaign, the Raptors forged lasting alliances with their fellow Chapters.

During the first 18 months of combat, the Raptors undertook frontline duties and acted as a mobile reserve force. Their most notable achievement during this period was the liberation of Surngraad, where they executed a brilliant assault on the planet’s polar defense fortress. Despite the severe damage sustained by the battle barge War Talon, the mission was a success.

Heavy Losses and Rebuilding

By 907.M41, the Raptors had suffered devastating losses, with their forces reduced by 35% to 60%. The fiercest battles, including those against the Mantis Warriors and Astral Claws in the Gargathea System, resulted in the destruction of the strike cruiser Arias Vex. Despite these setbacks, the Raptors played a key role in the victory on Gargathea III.

Deemed “combat-ineffective,” the Raptors were withdrawn from the Badab War in 908.M41. While most of the Chapter refocused on growing threats in the Ultima Segmentum, a small contingent remained in the Maelstrom Zone to support ongoing operations.

Survival on the Death World of Jemadal

In 969.M41, en route to assault the Ork World of Gramnia Major, the Raptors’ fleet was thrown off course and crash-landed on the Death World of Jemadal. Facing inhospitable conditions, the Chapter’s Techmarines modified the breathing apparatus of Power Armour to incorporate osmotic gills, allowing the Raptors to survive on the planet’s moisture-laden air.

For seven grueling years, the Raptors endured the challenges of Jemadal. They were finally rescued by the Ultramarines’ battle barge Rath’s Honour in 976.M41. The ordeal honed their jungle warfare expertise, shaping their combat strategies for future campaigns.

Later Campaigns: Armageddon and Taros

  • Armageddon (998.M41): The Raptors deployed to the equatorial jungles and vapor woods of Armageddon, where their jungle warfare skills proved invaluable. Fighting alongside the Armageddon Ork Hunters and Catachan Jungle Fighters, they executed deadly ambushes and precision strikes against Ork forces.
  • Taros Campaign: The Raptors committed their 3rd and 6th Companies, led by Captains Orelius and Kaedes, to the invasion of Taros. They spearheaded the neutralization of planetary defenses and later formed the rear guard, ensuring the Imperial forces’ safe withdrawal. The campaign left its mark on the Chapter—Captain Kaedes sustained severe injuries and was later interred in a Dreadnought.

A Testament to Survival

The Raptors Chapter stands as a symbol of resilience and adaptability. From their early triumphs in the Badab Sector to their mastery of jungle warfare, the Raptors’ legacy is one of unyielding determination in the face of adversity. Their story continues to inspire loyalty and awe among the Imperium’s defenders.
