The Evolution of the Sons of Horus
Deep within the Eye of Terror, a transformation was taking place. The old Sons of Horus, once a proud and efficient military force, were evolving into something new. Captain Falkus Kibre, a seasoned veteran of the Justaerin, had finally tracked down the Vengeful Spirit and Abaddon, the heir apparent to the Warmaster’s throne.
Rebirth of the Black Legion
Abaddon revealed his plan to destroy the clone of Horus and reform the Sons of Horus into a new Legion, one that would finish the war Horus had begun. With the Emperor’s Children fortress in ruins and the clone of Horus defeated, Abaddon declared himself the rightful successor of the Warmaster. Donning black armor, he rejected the name of Horus and all the failure that came with it. Thus, the Black Legion was born.
Unification and Transformation
Abaddon managed to reunify the bulk of the old surviving Sons of Horus under his banner. He also gathered disparate warbands from other Traitor Legions, transforming the Black Legion into an entirely new force. This new entity continued the Long War against the Imperium, waging Black Crusades that would shake the very foundations of the galaxy.
Notable Engagements
- First Pacification of Luna
- Battle of Luhman
- Siege of Reillis
- Battle of Gorro
- Astranii Campaign
- Overseer War
- Melchior Compliance

- Battle of Gyros-Thravian
Opposition and Persecution
Not all surviving Sons of Horus joined the Black Legion willingly. Many opposed Abaddon’s rule, and some warbands, such as Korosan Myrlath’s force, became his earliest enemies. Those who refused to bend the knee were either wiped out or forced to flee. A few, like the Sons of the Eye, Wolves of Horus, and True Sons, managed to evade Abaddon’s wrath and continue operating independently.
Gene-Seed Corruption
The gene-seed of the Luna Wolves, once considered pure, began to exhibit random mutations after their dedication to Chaos. This corruption likely went down to the gene-seed level, accelerated by the practice of seeking Daemonic possession. One notable feature of the pre-Heresy Luna Wolves was the high incidence of battle-brothers bearing a strong physical resemblance to Horus.
Culture and Organization
The Luna Wolves thrived on the personal charisma, ambition, and pride of their Primarch. These traits carried over into their organization and motivation, with ambition, brotherhood, and pride being notable features of their inner workings. The Speartip, an elite unit within the Legion, embodied these values, representing the pinnacle of achievement for any Son of Horus.
As the Black Legion marched forward, they left behind the legacy of the Sons of Horus, forging a new path that would be marked by bloodshed, destruction, and chaos.
